Periodontal Treatment
Periodontal disease happens when bacteria from plaque and tartar irritate and destroy the gums and the bones connected to the surrounding tissues. It is a chronic bacterial infection that, if left untreated, can cause bleeding gums, pain, and tooth loss in later stages.
Often, people are not sure that they have periodontal disease, because there are few early symptoms. Regular check-ups can help to catch this infection before real damage occurs.
Although there is no immediate cure for periodontal disease, the disease can be controlled with proper treatment.
Treatments
Periodontal treatment attempts to remove the bacteria within the periodontal pockets. Therapy will reduce the pocket depth so that a patient will be able to clean them at home. Regular dentist visits and other therapies help to make sure that the bacteria within the pockets stays low, so that no further bone loss is created. Healthy gums are extremely important to your overall health, and it is vital that you see a doctor if you think there might be a problem.
